She is Mary Ann Bevan
who was known as the ugliest woman in the world! She was
born in 1874 in London in a middle-class family. Reading more about her
life made me call her the most beautiful soul in the world. Mary Ann suffered
from Acromegaly due to which she had abnormal growth and facial distortion.
After her husband’s death, with no breadwinner in the house, accumulating debts,
and financial needs of four kids, she decided to enter the humiliating contest
and won the offensive title of “The
ugliest women in the world”.
Later she was hired by a circus, toured
from city to city, where people came to laugh and humiliate her. She endured
the ridicule of others to raise children and give them a better quality of
life. She died in 1993. Bevan image was used in early 2000s, on the birthday
cards in United Kingdom as hallmark which shows references as blind dating.
Later on a Dutch doctor made a complaint that it was disgrace of a women who
deformed her physical appearance by disease. So, hallmark accept it and stop
the distribution of cards.
To this day, society
judges people on their physical appearance. Contests like miss universe, miss
world, etc. are conducted to instill the idea of physical beauty in the minds
of the people. If our eyes could see souls instead of outer beauty, Marry Ann
would have been the most beautiful woman to date. She chose her children over
her self-esteem. That’s the beauty of a MOM!!
